The Village of Lake Bluff, with the assistance of the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO), is asking our local businesses to help to reduce the costs of waste disposal by completing a brief, five-minute survey no later than Friday, September 6, 2019:

We will use the information provided to evaluate the potential benefits of contracting with a single waste disposal company to provide solid waste and recycling services for all Village businesses, just as the Village does today for single-family residences. Please know that we will not pursue such a program unless we demonstrate that it will lower costs and maintain or enhance the service provided to our business community. Based on the other 25 to 30 municipalities in our area that have enacted a similar program, we anticipate that benefits may include:

  • Lower costs. Among nearby Lake County municipalities with similar programs, 90% of businesses pay less for solid waste services thanks to economies of scale.
  • Stable rates. The Village has the negotiating power to enter multiple-year contracts, limit annual cost growth, and avoid fuel and environmental surcharges.
  • Increased recycling opportunities. Our Lake County peers provide recycling service at no additional cost to businesses.
  • Innovative programs. The Village enacted one of the first residential food waste disposal programs in Illinois. We hope to provide similar innovative options for commercial customers that can further reduce and redirect landfill waste.
  • A greener environment. By reducing the number of heavy garbage trucks on our roads, we can reduce carbon emissions and road damage.

Business owners who complete the survey at help us understand the marketplace for waste hauling in the Village today and the costs our business community experiences. This data will be kept confidential, but an aggregated report will be available for review.
